What better way to support the competitors and their supporters for Ironman 2012 than by 'adopting' an athlete.
With Ironman less than 3 weeks away, Towncentre Taupō is encouraging businesses to support the athletes who travel to our town to compete from across the world.
A few years ago Towncentre Taupō ran an ‘Adopt an Athlete’ programme where local businesses put themselves forward to be a point of contact for competitors who needed someone with local knowledge, a friendly face and someone to just touch base with once they had arrived into town.
The ‘Adopt an Athlete’ programme was so successful in the past, we’re running it again this year. So far we’ve had over 40 athlete’s register and want to be adopted. The excitement shown in the emails from those who want to be adopted is pretty humbling. Being given the opportunity to make a connection with a local whilst they are here, is pretty amazing for both parties.
All that’s required is the willingness to be a point of contact for a competitor whilst they are here. There’s no investment required, athletes just like to be able to tap into your knowledge as a local, have a friendly face supporting them in the crowd, perhaps share a meal or show them around our district.
“We adopted an athlete who had travelled from USA, with his wife and their children and were fortunate enough to be able to take them out on the lake and shared a meal,” said Chris Johnston, owner of Replete, “the joy on our athletes face when we were cheering him on as he headed off on his run was the greatest reward. We still keep in touch”.
